Avoriaz stands out for its innovative approach since its creation in 1967 by 3 men from different backgrounds:
- The visionary sportsman: Jean VUARNET, Olympic champion (gold medalist in downhill skiing in 1960 at Squaw Valley – United States), originally from Morzine and initiator of the creation of the Portes du Soleil area.Jean Vuarnet left us just before the station’s 50th anniversary, January 2, 2017
- The promoter and the daring communicator: Gérard BREMONT, young promoter in 1964 at the time of his meeting with Jean VUARNET, and former CEO of the Pierre et Vacances-Center Parcs group.
- The talented architect: Jacques LABRO, already winner of the Grand Prix de Rome, and his associates: Jean-Jacques OZONI and Jean-Marc ROQUES who also won the Silver Square Prize in 1968 for the creation of the Séquoïa and Mélèzes residences.
From this extraordinary meeting was born a resort which has grown and evolved over the decades to amaze us again and again!

International renown, also thanks to the resort's cultural events
The Avoriaz International Fantastic Film Festival was founded in 1973 by French filmmaker and producer Claude Roy, with the support of Jean Vuarnet, one of the founders of the Avoriaz resort.
The event quickly became a major fixture in the world of fantastic cinema, attracting directors, actors, and enthusiasts from across the globe. In fact, it was at Avoriaz that Steven Spielberg first rose to prominence, winning the festival’s Grand Prix with the film *Duel*.
For 20 years, the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival helped promote this film genre while contributing to the resort’s international renown.
Today, new events have taken its place, such as the Avoriaz Dance Festival and the Rock The Pistes Festival.
